Provider SCUBA July 2026 Update
⚠️ Methodology Reminder
SCUBA = Scott's Completely Unscientific Behaviorist Assessment — a deliberately imperfect, directional look at staffing momentum across ABA providers.
This is not a census. LinkedIn undercounts direct-care staff, headcount lags payroll, and public job postings reflect intent more than execution. But across more than 130 organizations tracked consistently over time, these signals continue to surface meaningful structural patterns in the ABA market.
🤿 July Snapshot — The Data Still Isn't Cooperating
For much of 2026, the conversation around ABA has become increasingly cautious.
Reimbursement pressure. Utilization scrutiny. Authorization management. Margin compression.
Eventually, you would expect those conversations to show up in staffing behavior.
July still doesn't show it.
Nineteen of the Top 20 providers either maintained or increased LinkedIn headcount during the month. Only one provider posted a month-over-month decline, and the Top 20 rankings remained remarkably stable with just a single position change.
That's becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
The staffing data continues to tell a more resilient story than much of the industry's conversation.
Organizations may be operating under greater financial pressure.
They are not yet staffing like organizations preparing for contraction.
📊 MVP Cohort — An Early Q3 Check-In
Last month I introduced the MissionViewpoint Q2 2026 MVP Cohort—the five providers that demonstrated the strongest staffing momentum during the second quarter:
- Action Behavior Centers
- ABA Centers of America
- Behavioral Framework
- Golden Steps ABA
- Brighter Strides ABA
The obvious question was whether that momentum would continue into Q3.
After one month, the answer appears to be yes.
Between June and July, the cohort again outperformed the Top 20 by a factor of two.
One month doesn't establish another quarter.
But it does suggest the operating characteristics that drove exceptional Q2 growth remain intact.
One additional observation is worth noting.
Recent media coverage has highlighted layoffs and operational restructuring at ABA Centers of America. Those reports may accurately reflect changes occurring within portions of the organization. However, those changes are not yet evident in the company's overall LinkedIn staffing trend, which continues to indicate organizational growth.
📈 Provider-Platforms — A New Category Emerges
Because SCUBA stands for Scott's Completely Unscientific Behaviorist Assessment, it's worth emphasizing that this Provider-Platform view is even more directional (e.g. unscientific) than the provider rankings.
These organizations are fundamentally different businesses.
Some provide virtual autism care. Others support franchise networks. Others build technology-enabled operational infrastructure that allows independent providers to operate more effectively.
What they share is that technology isn't simply software they sell.
It enables a repeatable operating model across the organizations they support.
That diversity also makes LinkedIn staffing data more difficult to interpret than it is for traditional ABA providers.
Some provider platforms centralize employees under a single corporate brand, while others intentionally maintain separate provider identities.
As a result, employee counts—and growth rates—should be viewed as indicators of organizational momentum rather than direct comparisons of company scale.
The category also spans organizations at very different stages of maturity. Faster percentage growth often reflects a smaller starting base, while more established platforms continue adding employees from significantly larger organizations.

📰 Industry Developments
Project ALIGN Launches
Seven leading autism providers, including 360 Behavioral Health, BlueSprig Pediatrics, Helping Hands Family, Hopebridge, LEARN Behavioral, Lighthouse Autism Center, and Spectrum of Hope, announced Project ALIGN (Autism Longitudinal Insights and Growth Network), a collaborative initiative exploring standardized longitudinal outcome measurement using EarliPoint Health's assessment technology.
Previous efforts to establish common outcome measures have struggled to achieve broad adoption. Whether this coalition can generate greater momentum will be worth watching, particularly as providers and payors continue placing greater emphasis on demonstrating measurable outcomes.
Merakey to Acquire I Am Boundless
Merakey announced a strategic affiliation (I think a 'fancy way' to describe an acquisition) with I Am Boundless, creating a combined behavioral health, autism, and intellectual/developmental disabilities organization expected to exceed $1 billion in annual revenue. While broader than the traditional ABA provider market, the transaction reflects continued consolidation among diversified organizations with meaningful autism service lines.
Provider SCUBA Takeaways — July 2026
- Nineteen of the Top 20 providers maintained or increased LinkedIn staffing during July.
- The Top 20 rankings remained remarkably stable, with only one position changing during the month.
- The MissionViewpoint Q2 2026 MVP Cohort continued to outperform both the Top 20 during the first month of Q3.
- Recent reports of layoffs at ABA Centers of America are not yet reflected in the organization's overall LinkedIn staffing trend.
- Provider-Platforms continue evolving into a distinct category built around technology-enabled operating models rather than a single business model.
- Project ALIGN represents one of the industry's most significant collaborative efforts to establish standardized longitudinal outcome measurement.
Closing
The most interesting story in the July data isn't how much the market is growing.
It's that the market continues growing despite an operating environment that many expected would produce visible staffing contraction.
That doesn't mean the pressure isn't real.
It means providers, collectively, continue behaving as though long-term demand remains intact.
Whether that confidence proves warranted - or eventually begins to soften -remains one of the most important signals SCUBA will be watching over the coming quarters.
